Back to Back Yamma again

Had another blast racing around the dry and dusty tracks of Back Yamma Forest this year.

From the start we were off in a cloud of dust, with a bit of jockeying for positions prior to the first bit of single track. I’d been a bit casual about the start, so was in a large bunch and settled down to about 10th place in a train once the single track started. Must have been a few dozen on ahead as well.

Snowy Mt Nob

I rode up Mount Canobolas early this morning to see if there was any snow. It turned out there was a fair bit. Check out the photos.

I rode up from the Tea House. At the start I thought that maybe it had all melted already but after climbing for about 1km a saw small patches of snow and knew there'd be more at the top.

The creeks had a lot of water flowing in them, the most I've seen.

I also noticed a lot of animal tracks that I think were dogs. I assume these were wild dogs because there were no other tracks near them. There were also lots of wallaby and kangaroo tracks.

I road up the main road to the summit. Well, I rode till the snow got too deep to get any grip, then I walked. I took the power lines management trail from the top. It was fun to ride in deep-ish snow, though I took it very slow.

I half wished I'd had more time and taken my snowboard. There was enough to ride and build a jump I think, though it would have scratched the board a lot and been hard work for short 'runs'.

I should point out that the road was closed with gates shut as it always is during snow. I guess technically that means bikes aren't allowed too, but surely no-one minds as long as I was careful to not require a rescue Eye-wink

That's enough, I thought some would find this a bit interesting.

XC Quadricycle

After many years of contemplation, several weeks of sacrilegious dismembering of 5 bikes from the local tip with an angle grinder, bit of time with the TIG welder and lathe, a smattering of parts from my spares bin, a few ebay bits and plenty of head scratching..... my first concept XC Quadricycle has been born.

SXC Racing - The Season Finale

The last race in the Single Track Mind series at the great and exciting trails of Kinross near Orange, proved to be a great way to close out the race calendar for the SXC Racing Team for 2013.

Leaving a wet and cold Sydney, to sunshine and dusty trails of the Central West was an easy sell, and we had our Masters team primed to close out the series with another win, and our Mixed team going for bragging rights as they had already secured the series win from their consistency in the previous 4 races.

The weather was perfect and the terrain and track layout fantastic for this event. Props to Kevin and his team for putting this all together for what is a "once a year" event on this unique bit of single track at Coolah. A smallish field, with mens under 45's and over 45's and female categories, in each of the 3 distances (1 lap, 2 laps, 3 laps).
But boy, is it a tough race.....

Back to Back Yamma

After missing last year's event, I headed out to the Back Yamma State Forest on Saturday for another go round on this country track. Camped overnight at the event centre - plenty of space and no restrictions on campfires makes for a great camping experience there. Had a short spin on Saturday arvo to free up the legs after a few hours in the car and then lined up Sunday morning for the 50 km version.

Didn't quite get my training right for this one but did OK.

I'd been doing 1 long ride (time wise) a week with a fair bit of climbing in it. but, being time strapped was relying on Tuesday night racing to keep my speed up and struggled to get time back that up. I really needed some more aerobic stuff and some intervals work thrown in.

In the weeks leading up I'd noticed my speed had dropped off on Tuesday nights and recognising my error managed to get a couple of spinnerval sessions on the trainer, a little late but better than nothing.
